Throw Back

If given the opportunity to travel backwards in a time era it would definitely be the 80's thru 90's.  These were years in my life that will always remain golden.  This includes fashion, music, clubs, school, block parties etc.  Sit back as I take you places in your past that you will only be able to visit mentally.
Do you remember when you were that young, green kid just off the steps?  We were so intrigued with our older sisters/brothers, cousins, aunts, uncles and the older kids on the block.  It was on the front steps that you developed your first crush.  My first crush was on the now Rev.Run. You couldn't tell me when Sucker MC's came out that I wasn't going to marry Joseph Simmons and be known to the world as Mrs.Run.  My cousin, Steve took us to the movie theater in Center City on Chestnut Street to see Krush Groove when it first came out.  Matter of fact, I still look at Krush Groove religiously.  I know yall remember this...........................................................................................................................................
Yes I did take it there.  I will never forget when I first seen the movie, Beat Street.  Every boy in the high school wanted to be Lee.  In fact, Lee rocked the Kangol a longtime before LL Cool J.  Girls do you remember memorizing this part of the movie?
Us girls can Boogie too.  I would go off on this part.  "It's working" in my Double K's voice.  But, I bet you 60's babies remember this song at block parties.  Or when dee jays use to challenge in the playground.  Watch out Uncle Ted "Here Comes The Beat"
I'll always remember on Saturday mornings my uncle would watch White Shadows with Coach Reid, Soul Train, and Kung Fu movies.  These were some of the things that I looked forward to.  However, nothing can top those after school specials on Channel 12.  As a matter of fact, nothing could top watching Dancing On Air during the week.  In the mirror practicing the latest dance moves, checking your butt out in the mirror and pretending that Mr.Tuxedo was your boyfriend.  But, looking at it now you see how Corny it really was.  Check it out the black guys in the end of the video below.......................................................
How many of you made it your business to be in the house for the next What Happening episode?  If you was me there wasn't an episode that you missed.  I think everyone loved to see Freddy Stubbs a.k.a. Rerun dance.  But,everyone also loved to hate that smart mouth of Raj's little sister, Dee.  You're in for a treat.  I have that for you.................................................................
Dang, I sure did take you there.  But, now let's go there on the crazy styles.  Do you guys remember when it was mandatory for girls to wear the blue gym suits for school.  The ones with the snap buttons that your mother made you wear over your opaque or cable knit tights?  You barely made it to the bathroom if you held it long because it took 10 minutes in itself to just get the darn thing down.  If you don't remember that I'm more than positive that you remember the Coca-Cola sweatshirt.  I know some of you probably still have that shirt.
Ladies if that isn't enough to take you all the way back I have something that I know will.  Free movie passes to lady at the computer that shouted Guess Jeans.  I'll never forget may he r.i.p., Dupont got a whooping from our Principal Mrs.Cartwright for making me fall and tearing my jeans in the knee.  I was devastated because these were my favorite pair.  They had the zipper at the bottom and made my butt appear larger than it was.
Fellas, don't fret because I have something for you as well.  I remember when all the fly guys were going to City Blue on Market Street across from John Wanamakers to get Sergio Tachinni sweatsuits.  However, if you were really balling you got yours from Boyds.  Boyds actually was located on Market Street originally.  Damn, I guess that I am showing yours and my age.  But, it's coming from a positive place.  Therefore, it doesn't matter.
Don't laugh too hard ladies because there was a time when we actually wore these skirts and if you were really fly you had the shirt to match.  Much props goes out to Fila for the tennis skirts.
I must say I was ecstatic when I got my first pair of Gucci Sneakers.  I remember them being like two sizes too big because I had very tiny feet. But, it was like Gucci literally made you official in the hood.  If you didn't own a Gucci particle you were whack and definitely needed to step your game up.  I'm not talking about when City Blue started selling high top Gucci sneakers either.  I'm talking about when you could only purchase them from Alantic City.  Everybody I'm sure remember the Gucci era.
So, we covered music, fashion, television and now I am going to take you out with a song that I know many of you can recite verbatim.  Thank you so much for taking this trip with me and may you be blessed abundantly....Peace.........
